No, this is not an article about the hymn Silent Night. Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a non-profit organization headquartered in Twin Falls, ID, dedicated to building top notch bunk beds for children and families in need.
All children deserve a safe comfortable place to sleep at night. In the Roanoke Valley and all across the U.S. too many children are without a bed or even a pillow to sleep on. These children end up sleeping on couches, blankets or even floors.
The Roanoke, VA chapter of Sleep In Heavenly Peace (SHP) began with Dave Jones reading an article about the organization in a tool industry trade magazine. On December 20, SHP became a full edged chapter here in the Roanoke Valley. Our chapter has formed a core team of folks who are working together to help kids who don’t have a bed in which to sleep. We have been blessed by so many people who have donated time, talents, money, power tools, lumber, bedding, and other supplies. Our core team has now built 15 bunk beds, which will get 30 children off of the floor. As of this writing, we have received applications for beds on behalf of 52 children (we have delivered 19 beds) and the requests keep coming in.
In order to begin to satisfy this need we are going to need help on many fronts. Our core team will partner with different organizations such as local businesses, clubs, church groups, etc. who are interested in giving back to the community by sponsoring events called “BuildDays.” On a Build Day (usually a Saturday morning) our core team will bring all the tools, lumber and supplies needed to build beds. We will then show their members, employees, friends and families how to build beds. It is a team building experience that allows volunteers to network and build relationships while providing necessary and critical support to our community.
